The Baiyin Copper Smelter
commissioned in 1960 at capacity of 32,100
tpy of copper and 170,000 tonnes
of sulphur acid. It reached full capacity in 1965. Initially the smelter
flowsheet consisted of fluidised-bed roasting, reverberatory furnace
smelting, Peirce Smith converters and anode production. Off gas from the
fluidised-bed roaster and converters is collected and converted to sulphuric
acid. Baiyin Nonferrous Group Co. Ltd. known as BNMC is a Chinese company based in Baiyin, Gansu Province, China. The company was the main copper supplier in China. Since 15 February 2017, Baiyin Nonferrous is a listed company in the Shanghai Stock Exchange. In 2017, the localized version of Fortune ranked Baiyin Nonferrous as the 116th of top 500 Chinese enterprises; the predecessor of the company was established in 1954, as one of the industrial project of the First Five Year Plan. It was the main copper supplier in China, the mining pit opened in 1956 was shut down in 1988; the city of Baiyin was declared by the government as “resource exhaustion”. As of 2016, the company rely on investment in China, South Africa, Peru, DR Congo and the Philippines. Construction of the smelter and associated refinery commenced in 1955 using a Russian design and Russian and Chinese equipment. At commissioning in 1960 the smelter consisted of a reverberatory furnace, two Peirce-Smith converters, two reverberatory type anode furnaces and an acid plant. Capacity was 30 kt/a copper. Work commenced on the Baiyin process in 1972 and, following experience with two smaller pilot plants, a 44 m2 hearth furnace was built in 1975. Essentially, the Baiyin process is a modification of the reverberatory furnace by dividing it into two zones by a partition wall, which allows matte to flow from the smelting zone to the settling zone. Both zones are fired with coal and air/oxygen is injected into the melt through tuyères through the sidewalls of the smelting zone. Offgas from the smelting zone is routed via a waste heat boiler,an ESP to the acid plant. In 1980 the reverberatory furnace was converted to the Baiyin process and subsequently the roasters were shut down. By 1992 capacity had reached 57kt/a anode and, mainly due to increasing concentrate grades, by 2001 had increased to 80kt/a anode. The smelter was shutdown for maintenance and to carry out work associated with the expansion of the plant from 19 May to the end of June 2004. Following the shutdown the stated cathode capacity is 70 kt/a with a further expansion to 100kt in progress. The smelter was shut down for maintenance for 40 days starting May 20, 2005 |

News | July 21, 2019
- Baiyin Nonferrous Metals Group, a copper smelter in China's north-western
province of Gansu, will restart its 200,000 mt/year of capacity by the end
of July, SMM learned on Monday July 22. Capacity suspended for a month at
the end of June and lowered scheduled production of the mill by 7,000 mt in
July. September 24, 2009 - Baiyin Nonferrous Metals (Group) Co. Ltd., a leading state-owned lead and zinc smelter, recently began operations at its new 100,000-ton refined copper production facility in Gansu Province, according to a company announcement on Sept. 21."The facility is the first phase of a 200,000-ton refined copper production project. The second phase is expected to start production by the end of 2010," an employee surnamed Zhang, from Baiyin Nonferrous, told Interfax on Sept. 24.Previously, the company had an annual refined copper production capacity of 50,000 tons. It also has another 200,000-ton refined copper production facility in the pipeline, and may commence construction work shortly. In addition, Baiyin Nonferrous plans to list on the Shanghai Stock Exchange before the end of 2011, as well as expand its total annual nonferrous metals production capacity to 650,000 tons and boost its sales revenue to RMB 30 billion ($4.39 billion) per annum.Baiyin Nonferrous currently has a total annual refined lead and zinc production capacity of 200,000 tons, and in June, it commenced construction work on a 200,000-ton refined zinc production facility, according to Zhang.Furthermore, Baiyin Nonferrous is also planning to acquire nonferrous metals mining resources in Gansu and overseas, he added.CITIC Group currently holds a 49 percent stake in Baiyin Nonferrous, while the local Gansu government holds the remaining 51 percent stake. September 9, 2009 - Baiyin Nonferrous Group Co Ltd, China’s third-largest zinc producer and a major copper smelter, plans to more than double annual metal production capacity to 650,000 tonnes in 3 years, a top executive said on Wednesday. The firm, 49 percent owned by CITIC Group, was working on a listing plan in Shanghai and aimed to list its shares by 2011, Chairman Li Peixing told a lead and zinc conference in Lanzhou city in Gansu province.“We want to use CITIC’s overseas project experience to speed up our overseas and domestic mining project development,” he told Reuters during the conference.State-owned CITIC bought the stake last year from the Gansu government.Li said the firm would use CITIC as a platform for overseas mining acquisitions. Baiyin currently has 100,000 tonnes of copper capacity, about 170,000 tonnes of zinc and 30,000 tonnes of lead, while a company executive said the 3-year plan was to build another 200,000-300,000 tonnes of zinc capacity. The Gansu government has given Baiyin the right to consolidate lead and zinc mines in the province, which would provide resources for the expansion, he added.About 100,000 tonnes of outdated zinc production capacity in Gansu had been closed, the executive said. It was not clear whether that capacity would be closed permanently or be upgraded.Gansu holds 9.4 million tonnes of zinc resources and 3 million tonnes of lead resources, a provincial government official told the same conference.Baiyin also plans to build another 150,000-200,000 tonnes of copper production capacity by 2011, the executive said, adding that the supply of imported concentrates would be an important factor for construction of the new capacity. |
