BIG
RIVER
ZINC
CORPORATION
is an electrolytic zinc refinery located in Sauget, Illinois located about 3
miles from downtown St Louis, Missouri. The refinery is located on
approximately 37 acres of property. For over 60 years, the refinery
produced zinc metal by treating zinc sulphide concentrate from local mines
to produce approximately 100,000 tons per year of zinc metal. In February
2006 the refinery ceased operation. ZincOx Resources plc acquired the facility in June 2006 and starting in May 2007 began to modify the facility to make it suitable for processing oxide concentrate (HZO) recovered from Electric Arc Furnace Dust. The zinc contained in the HZO will be dissolved in BIG RIVER ZINC's refurbished leach plant. The resultant zinc bearing solution will be purified in a new solvent extraction circuit, prior to conventional zinc recovery using BIG RIVER ZINC's existing electrowinning, melting and casting equipment to produce zinc ingots. The capacity of the facility will be 90,000 metric tons of zinc metal, mostly in the form of Special High Grade Zinc or alloyed specifically for use for various steel companies. BIG RIVER ZINC is strategically located with access to several interstate highways, is serviced by two rail lines, which in turn connect with every major railroad in the country and is near the Mississippi River allowing transport by water. This location exploits BIG RIVER ZINC's advantage to efficiently supply high quality metal ingots to its large Midwestern customers. |
