General SOMAIR has been mining several uranium deposits in the northwestern part of Niger, near Arlit, since 1971. Arlit borders on the Sahara Desert, more than 1,200 kilometers by road from Niamey, the capital of Niger.

The ore is mined in a quarry-type operation (open pit mines). It is then processed in a plant at the site. Annual production is around 1,150 metric tons of uranium in the form of concentrates. SOMAIR has been engaged in a process to improve its competitiveness for several years so that it can continue to rank among the world's top producers.

SOMAIR employs some 600 people, fewer than 6 of whom are expatriates.
SOMAIR’s presence brings jobs to local people and provides health and social services to an isolated and economically disadvantaged region.
