	August 26, 2021 - On August 26, 2021, the handover of
Weser-Metall to Glencore was successfully completed. As part of the Glencore
Group, the company is given a new name: Nordenham Metall GmbH. This means
that Nordenhamer Zinkhütte (NZH) and Nordenham Metall GmbH (NMG) are
reunited under one roof after almost 20 years. Together they are "Glencore
Nordenham".  "I would like to thank everyone involved and partners who
have contributed to the success of this acquisition," says Koen Demesmaeker,
site manager at Glencore Nordenham. “By entering the tradition-rich
Nordenham location, we are strengthening our lead division and expanding our
competencies for the European market. We will start the integration process
immediately.”  The takeover of NMG not only offers new opportunities
for jobs. The first projects for improved environmental protection have
already been launched: "We're not waiting: we're starting!", says Nordenham
Metall Managing Director Dr. Ulrich Kerney. With the closing, the first
integration projects with the colleagues from Zinkhütte are already under
way. Being in the immediate vicinity of the Nordenham zinc works gives us
great advantages for our new start in the Glencore group. The exchange was
already very intensive in the closing phase.”  The parent company
Glencore will not only invest in the modernization of Nordenham Metall, but
will also merge the zinc and lead smelters organizationally. Glencore has
developed a concept for the future of the site that envisages the extensive
integration of both companies into an efficient production site for zinc and
lead. For Rainer Wahlers, who has been managing director of the Zinkhütte
for many years, this is a great opportunity for both companies: “We will do
everything we can to ensure that the two companies grow together as quickly
as possible. Nordenhamer Zinkhütte has been part of Glencore for many years
and is therefore very familiar with the processes and corporate culture of
the group. We will use this experience.  In the past, the huts changed
hands several times. The deepest turning point came in 2003, when the zinc
division was sold to the Glencore subsidiary Xstrata and the smelters were
operated separately from then on. With the takeover of Weser-Metall by
Glencore, the lead and zinc works are now reunited under one roof after
almost 20 years: together they are "Glencore Nordenham". acquire the Nordenham Smelter from Metaleurop, which was announced on 12 December 2002. December 12, 2002 - Xstrata PLC said its subsidiary Asturiana de Zinc SA has signed an agreement to buy the Nordenham Zinc Smelter from Metaleurop SA for 100 mln usd, including a payment of 13 mln usd for zinc related inventories. The acquisition will be funded from Xstrata's existing corporate facilities. Xstrata CEO Mick Davis said, "The purchase of Nordenham is consistent with Xstrata's stated strategy to leverage its balance sheet strength in opportunistic, incremental acquisitions of quality assets at the bottom of a commodity cycle. Nordenham is a modern, efficient zinc producer, which complements San Juan de Nieva, our existing, highly profitable European smelter in Spain." The deal is structured to enable Asturiana de Zinc SA to purchase Metaleurop Zinc Holding GmbH, a newly created subsidiary of Metaleurop, enabling Xstrata to secure the benefits of a fully restated fixed asset base and to exclude historical environmental and other liabilities. The Nordenham plant, near Bremerhaven in northern Germany, has an annual production capacity of 133,000 tonnes zinc metal, and is one of the world's most profitable and cost efficient zinc producers, the company said. The acquisition will take Xstrata Zinc's total annual zinc capacity from its current 470,000 tonnes to over 600,000 tonnes, accounting for 20.5 pct of European zinc metal production and 6.4 pct of global output. Nordenham is expected to generate EBITDA in excess of 20 mln usd on a proforma basis in calendar year 2002, and currently has 296 employees. |
