Introduction
The following are general points of inspection for all tank cars to ensure that they are in good order and that there are safety hazards present.
1.
Inspect the side ladders, grab irons, and running boards. If broken, bent,
loose or otherwise defective, they must be replaced.
2.
Inspect the sill steps and grab irons. If broken, bent, loose or otherwise
defective, they must be replaced.
3.
Ensure that the safety platforms and handrails are firmly attached.
4.
Ensure that the handbrake ratchet pawl is engaged in ratchet.
5.
Check that the car is properly stenciled.
6.
Check the car number and volume capacity are on the end of the car.
7.
Check the car number and weight capacity are on the side of the car.
8.
Check the tank car test date and verify that testing is not required.
9.
Inspect the placard holders. There must be four on each car and they must
not be loose or broken.
10. Inspect
the tank bands and anchors. The tank bands must be tight.
11. Check
that the friction block clearances are at least 1/8" on one side.
12. Inspect
the journal bearings. There must be at least 1/8" of oil in the reservoir.
13. Check the
wheels for flange wear. The flanges must not be thin or sharp. Check
for flat spots on the wheels.
14. Check the
uncouple rod to make sure it is operational.
15. Check to
make sure the couple pin is in place.
16. Inspect
the air hoses and ensure they are in place.
17. Make sure
no springs are missing and they are in place.
18. Check that the release rod is in intact and operational on air brake
release.
