Remarks 2003 - WSA plant revamped to comply increased capacity demands and more stringent emission control requirements.

Some years after the implementation of the WSA plant, the introduction of natural gas made the gasifier redunant.  However, due to the advantageous heat economy of the WSA plant, the client decided to convert the overall plant to a power plant and expand its capacity.

Cooling water: 8 m3/ton acid (dT = 10ºC)
Steam production: 53 ton/h
Power consumption: 470 kWh/h
Fuel consumption: 1000 Nm3/h (LHV=2821 kcal/Nm3)

General The former town gas plant in Vresova was converted to 400 MWe combined cycle power generation in 1996.  Three main production technologies currently form the processing part of Sokolovská Uhelná: The coal preparation plant prepares the coal charge for gas production in the pressurised gas works and in the classic thermal power plant.  Pressure gas works implements the production of the energy gas.  Electricity and Technological steam for further operations of the processing part is made in the energy section with a classic heating plant and the combined cycle power plant.  Twenty-six Lurgi-type fixed bed gasifiers processing brown coal from the company's own local cast mines form the basis of the plant.  The raw gas from the gasifiers is treated by the Rectisol process and fed into two GE licensed 9E gas turbines.  In 2007 a Siemens liquids gasifier was commissioned to provide additional syngas from tars produced by the fixed-bed gasifiers.

The Group's principal activity is the production of lignite for factories and power suppliers, sorted coal for factories and households, briquets, generator gas, technical gases (oxygen and nitrogen), crushed and sorted stone, clay and chemical products (tar, fennol concentrate, liquid ammonia, sulfuric acid and other). The Company exploits about 10 million tons of lignite per year, of which 6 million tons is sold. The rest is used to produce 3.4 TWh of electricity and 300,000 tons of briquets. The Company also distributes power to the nearby agglomeration including the city of Karlovy Vary. It is the largest independent producer of electricity in the country. Solid fuels accounted for 34% of 2003 revenues; electricity, 33%; sale of goods, 12%; services, 9% and others, 12%.
