Sulacid: Panama Canal drought pressures flows to Chile
  

December 12, 2023 - Extensive delays at the drought-stricken Panama Canal have added further pressure to Chilean sulphuric acid demand as vessels face delays, which is prompting a moderate bullish sentiment in the market.  Chilean acid buyers have seen their cargoes delayed for up to a month, which coupled with the imminent start of the heavy swell period at the key discharge port in Mejillones has added further pressure to ensure adequate stock levels for the next few months.  Vessel owners are reportedly reluctant to sail to Chile from Europe or seek alternative costly and time-consuming routes to circumvent the Panama Canal, such as passing through the Magellan strait, which adds around 10 days of sailing time to the voyage from Europe and increases freight costs.  Chilean sulphuric acid importers are expected to increasingly look to Asia to secure spot cargoes for arrival in 2024 as the drought conditions at the Panama Canal are likely to last for several months, until the next wet season — which starts around the middle of next year.  Waiting times to cross the canal were around 15-20 days and the Panama Canal Authority recently warned that vessels without a reservation may face "indefinite delays".  Freight rates from northwest Europe to Chile were last assessed in the $90-105/t range for an 18,000-30,000t acid cargo, but pressure is increasing with new quotes heard at the higher end of the range, into the three-digits, owing to the risks of delays.


TransNamib moved 297,636t of acid in 2022 

November 10, 2023 - TransNamib transported a total of 297,636 metric tonnes of sulphuric acid in the year 2022, as announced by the company this week. This sulphuric acid plays a vital role in supporting the smelting operations at Dundee Precious Metals in Tsumeb.  Abigail Raubenheimer, the Corporate Communications Manager, stated in an interview that TransNamib possesses the capability to transport various mining products. The range of minerals and metals that the company handles include copper concentrate, copper blister, manganese, coal, and yellow cake.  She further noted, “We have established a strong relationship with the Namibia Chamber of Mines, particularly with its CEO. As a company, we actively participated in one of their ‘Bosberaad’ (bush strategic sessions) and their annual Expo.”  Raubenheimer emphasized the advantages of using rail transport for sulphuric acid tankers. These tankers provide a secure and controlled environment for the transportation of this corrosive substance. Their design is inherently resistant to the corrosive properties of the chemical, reducing the risk of leaks or spills.  Additionally, she highlighted the cost-effectiveness of rail transport for bulk shipments over long distances. “By utilizing rail for sulphuric acid transport, we can minimise road congestion and reduce the environmental impact,” she explained. In 2022, TransNamib successfully moved a significant 297,636 tonnes of sulphuric acid via rail.  Raubenheimer affirmed TransNamib’s commitment to delivering top-notch service to its customers. Despite operational challenges related to aging equipment and general infrastructure conditions, the company remains dedicated to maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with its clients.  She also pointed out the growing volumes of sulphuric acid transported by TransNamib over the years as evidence of their strong relationships with various customers. In the 2015/2016 financial year, the company acquired 90 additional tankers, bringing the total fleet of sulphuric acid tankers to 120.Raubenheimer stressed the safety advantages of rail transport for hazardous materials compared to other transportation modes, citing the stricter safety regulations and dedicated routes that railways provide. She noted that prior to Namibian independence, legislation mandated the use of rail exclusively for the transportation of hazardous and dangerous goods.  “As part of TransNamib’s new road-to-rail strategy, one of our key priorities is to engage with lawmakers to emphasize the importance of legislation that promotes safety and protects Namibian roads by designating specific products for rail transport,” she added.  Furthermore, Raubenheimer disclosed TransNamib’s plans to procure additional sulphuric acid tankers during the current Integrated Strategic Business Plan period, aimed at enhancing their customer service capabilities. 


Boliden introduces ‘sustainable’ game-changer: Low-Carbon Sulphuric Acid 

October 27, 2023 - Sweden-based Boliden has taken what it says is a significant step toward a greener future with the launch of Low-Carbon Sulphuric Acid.  The new product increases Boliden’s collection of low-carbon offerings, joining the likes of Low-Carbon Zinc, Recycled Zinc, Low-Carbon Copper and Recycled Copper within the Green Transition Metals portfolio.  Sven Hjelmstedt, Director Sales at Boliden, says: “Our long-term work with sustainability empowers Boliden and our clients to create products with significantly lower carbon footprints. We support our clients’ sustainability goals and support them in reducing their Scope 3 emissions, contributing to an improved environmental performance for their industries.”  Low-Carbon Sulphuric Acid showcases Boliden’s strong commitment to sustainability, the company says. It has a minimal carbon footprint, measuring less than 25 kg of CO2 per tonne – well below the EU average.  What sets Boliden apart is that the company produces sulphuric acid from the same raw materials used to produce metals using a green energy mix, making it highly resource and CO₂ efficient, compared with the majority of global sulphuric acid production, which mainly relies on raw materials from oil refining.  Hjelmstedt added: “For clients, the benefits are twofold. Low-Carbon Sulphuric Acid helps reduce their carbon footprints while providing a sustainable product independent of fossil fuels. This is particularly valuable for industries reliant on sulphuric acid such as the global fertiliser and wood-based product industries.”


Nornickel starts sulphur dioxide capture in Russia's most polluted city
 

October 25, 2023 - Russian mining giant Nornickel launched a multi-billion dollar project on Wednesday aimed at reducing sulphur dioxide emissions by 45% in Norilsk, Russia's most polluted city, through a complex capture programme.  That price tag may change as Nornickel, though not directly targeted with Western sanctions, was forced to find new solutions for the final stage of the project's development as foreign suppliers pulled out over Moscow's actions in Ukraine.  The project entails converting sulphur dioxide into sulphuric acid, which is then neutralised with limestone to generate gypsum waste. Nornickel said smelters in the Arctic city of Norilsk release roughly 1.8 million tonnes of sulphur dioxide emissions annually.  Nornickel said production had begun on Wednesday at the Nadezhda Smelter, 16 kilometres (9.94 miles) from Norilsk. It plans to invest a total of 180 billion roubles ($1.93 billion) in that part of the project that should cut sulphur dioxide emissions there by 45% by 2025 from 2015 levels.  Company Chief Executive Vladimir Potanin has said Nornickel is looking for solutions at the Copper Plant and plans to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions there tenfold by 2027.

First Quantum Minerals to expand Kansanshi copper mine with MECS technology for smelter

September 25, 2023 - Global copper company First Quantum Minerals Ltd. has contracted with MECS, Inc. (MECS), a subsidiary of Elessent Clean Technologies, for the Kansanshi Smelter Expansion at the Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi, Zambia. The MECS scope will include a redesign of the existing sulfur-burning sulfuric acid plant into a copper smelter off-gas recovery sulfuric acid plant.  This transition to a copper smelter off-gas recovery acid plant will enable First Quantum to reduce emissions from the existing copper smelter, increase production at the mine, and supply more copper to the global market which will enable the adoption of greener technologies.  The MECS sulfuric acid design for First Quantum incorporates products and technologies such as MECS catalyst for low emissions and high conversion, Brink mist eliminators for superior mist elimination and ZeCor alloy towers, ZeCor pump tank and UniFlo acid distributor technology for operational reliability and efficiency.  Startup of the Kansanshi Smelter Expansion at the mine site in Solwezi, Zambia is expected to take place in 2025.

 

Rail project for Chile's Escondida mine gets green light

 

September 11, 2023 - Chilean railroad company Ferronor received the green light from the environmental review agency for a US$85.4mn project to transport sulfuric acid and copper cathodes along an existing line between the Escondida copper mine and the ports of Antofagasta and Angamos in Mejillones.  The project involves the construction of a maintenance workshop for locomotives and equipment in Mejillones municipality, and a patio for cathodes in Antofagasta.  The facilities will operate for 24 years, according to the EIS approved last Thursday.  The sulfuric acid could come from trader Interacid, Mejillones port or Glencore's Altonorte smelter. Transportation of up to 1.2Mt/y will be allowed.  The copper cathodes, meanwhile, will come from the Escondida mine, operated by BHP, and sent to ports with a maximum transport capacity of 400,000t/y.  Ferronor will operate the 381km railway with three daily round-trips.  Escondida is the world's largest copper mine.

 

Induron Protective Coatings Launches New NOVALAC Epoxy

 

August 11, 2023 - Induron Protective Coatings announces the launch of its newest product, Novasafe. Novasafe is a furfuryl modified, thick film, ceramic-filled novolac epoxy and it can stand up to the most extreme environments encountered in treatment plants.  “Water and wastewater treatment plant owners, operators, and engineers are under more pressure than ever to protect our national water infrastructure,” said William Seawell, Induron technical service manager. “In a period of increased influent volume, more chemically extreme influent, and increasing regulatory pressure, there is an increasing need for longer immersion coating service lives.  “For years, Induron’s method of choice for protecting buried ductile iron pipe interiors, water tank interiors and water treatment plant interiors has been thick film ceramic epoxy technology,” Seawell added. “In response to industry challenges, Induron is bringing that same technology to the most extreme service environments encountered in treatment plants with its introduction of Novasafe ceramic novolac.”  Novasafe’s formulation chemistry is unique in the industry, and it is able to accomplish what treatment plant operators need in the most extreme environments with one less coat compared to traditional epoxies and less film thickness than polyurethane/polyurea. Novasafe is able to accomplish this with its unique resin and filler package.  As a benchmark of performance, Novasafe is able to withstand exposure to sulfuric acid at all concentration ranges for extended periods of time. Many industry novolacs can withstand dilute or 98% sulfuric acid but the range of 93-97% has historically been problematic for un-baked novolac products— even in the oil and gas industries where this is a significant issue.  “While Novasafe is not appropriate for all services—no lining material is— there is a place in every treatment plant specification or treatment plant where Novasafe can assist in providing long-term asset protection, reducing maintenance load, saving maintenance dollars and improving the look of the facility,” said Davies Hood, Induron president. 


Richmond chemical plant fined $1.15 million for years-long air pollution violations


July 27, 2023 - A sulfuric acid manufacturing plant in Richmond was fined $1.15 million Thursday for violations connected to faulty emissions monitors, local air-quality officials said.  Since at least 2014, Chemtrade underreported sulfur dioxide emissions after failing to properly calibrate, operate and maintain its continuous monitoring system, according to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.  These measurements at the plant, located at 525 Castro St. next to the Chevron Refinery in the city’s western industrial hub, are crucial to determining compliance with emissions limits.  While the air district’s audit did not find evidence that Chemtrade’s sulfur dioxide emissions exceeded its permitted limits, BAAQMD reported that the company’s monitoring system was unable to reliably monitor the extent of the plant’s emissions.  Sulfur dioxide — a colorless, pungent gas used to produce fertilizers, explosives and petroleum catalysts — can have adverse impacts on the respiratory system, including wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. When combined with water and air, the chemical forms the main component of acid rain.  BAAQMD officials said Chemtrade’s reported emission rates are estimated to be an average of 33% lower since 2014. Agency staff have recommended that a portion of the $1.15 million fine go towards community efforts to improve air quality in Richmond.  These problems were a long time coming; the agency’s Hearing Board had previously issued seven notices to the Richmond facility prior to Thursday’s announcement, including an abatement order in April 2022.  Additionally, Chemtrade was fined $135,000 six years ago for air pollution violations from 2009 through 2014, including loading alkylation acid from storage tanks into trucks without permits — potentially fouling the air with sulfuric acid fumes.  Chemtrade could not be reached for comment.  While most of the problems occurred while the plant was owned by General Chemical West, Chemtrade–which acquired the plant in 2014–claimed in 2017 that all of the violations found during a voluntary audit were corrected.  According to a Richmond Chamber of Commerce directory, Chemtrade is currently one of North America’s largest suppliers of sulfuric acid, liquid sulfur dioxide and sodium nitrite, as well as a leading regional supplier of sulfur, sodium chlorate, potassium chloride, and zinc oxide.  Dr. Philip Fine, BAAQMD’s executive officer, said Thursday’s fine reflects the air district’s efforts to protect Bay Area residents’ health.  “The substantial financial penalties for these violations send a clear message to Chemtrade that they must accurately monitor their sulfur dioxide emissions in compliance with all air quality regulations to help protect those living in the surrounding communities,” Fine said in a statement.

GrandiT to build capacity of 80,000 t per year sulphuric acid
 

July 17, 2023 - GrandiT planned to build a project of 196,000 t/a ultrapure electronic chemicals, which is predicted to be completed by 2025.  The Reply on Approval of GrandiT Co., Ltd. (GrandiT)'s Initial Public Offering (IPO) Registration Application issued by China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) on 13 June, 2023 showed that GrandiT intended to raise capital of USD211.37 million (RMB1.50 billion), USD169.10 million (RMB1.20 billion) of which will be used for its project of 196,000 t/a ultrapure electronic chemicals.  This ultrapure electronic chemical project, with a total investment of USD194.46 million (RMB1.38 billion), contains capacity of 80,000 t/a electronic grade sulphuric acid, 30,000 t/a electronic grade hydrofluoric acid, 30,000 t/a electronic grade nitric acid, 25,000 t/a electronic grade ammonium hydroxide, 20,000 t/a electronic grade hydrogen peroxide, 10,000 t/a electronic grade isopropyl alcohol, and 1,000 t/a electronic grade mixed acid. This project is still under construction. This project is divided into two phases: the first phase includes 40,000 t/a electronic grade sulphuric acid and 12,500 t/a electronic grade ammonium hydroxide; the second phase will build the rest of the capacity. The construction period of the whole project is five years—the first phase is estimated to start trial production in June 2023; the second phase is expected to begin trial production in Oct. 2025.  Notably, Zhejiang Juhua Co., Ltd. and China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund Co., Ltd. are the largest shareholders of GrandiT, holding 35.2% shares of the company respectively. GrandiT engages in R&D, production, and sales of wet electronic chemicals, electronic specialty gas, and precursor materials and its wet electronic chemicals include electronic grade hydrofluoric acid, electronic grade sulphuric acid, electronic grade nitric acid, electronic grade hydrochloric acid, electronic grade ammonium hydroxide.


Chemtrade Provides Business and Project Updates

 

June 23, 2023 - As previously advised in May 2023, the capital costs for the KPCT Advanced Chemicals joint venture greenfield ultrapure sulphuric acid plant in Arizona have come in significantly higher than originally estimated. The joint venture has now had a chance to analyze the results of the front-end engineering design (FEED) studies and has looked for cost savings where possible. However, Chemtrade believes the costs cannot be further reduced to any material extent. The aggregate capital costs for this project are now estimated to range between US$300 million and US$380 million, which represents an increase of approximately 50% over the original estimate. Roughly half of the increased cost is due to higher labour costs to build the plant, with the balance due to equipment costs and some changes in scope to ensure compliance with regulations.  Together with our joint venture partner, Chemtrade has made the decision to put the project on hold while revised commercial agreements are negotiated with customers to ensure that the project generates an acceptable level of return. In light of this decision, Chemtrade will provide an updated organic growth capital expenditure range for 2023 when it releases its second quarter results in August 2023.  “This was a difficult decision for us, but we need to make sure that any project we enter will achieve an acceptable level of financial return for our investors. In this case, putting the project on hold will enable the joint venture to continue negotiations to secure acceptable contracts with offtake partners,” stated Scott Rook, President and Chief Executive Officer of Chemtrade. “While nothing is certain, given the expected growth in demand by the major chip producers for ultrapure acid in North America, we believe that we will reach agreements to supply KPCT ultrapure sulphuric acid to the new fabs being built and expect to provide additional updates on this project before the end of 2023.”

Mr. Rook added, “In the meantime, our Cairo ultrapure sulphuric acid expansion project continues to be on time and on budget, with an expected start up in 2024. As just announced with our updated guidance, our other businesses are performing extremely well and we now expect 2023 to generate a record level of Adjusted EBITDA.”


Sumitomo acquires sulfuric acid company in the U.S
 

June 8, 2023 - Sumitomo Corporation of Americas (SCOA) together with its parent, Sumitomo Corporation Japan (SC) announced its acquisition of Saconix LLC (Saconix; Roswell, Ga.), a company engaged in the procurement, sale, storage and distribution of sulfuric acid in the Western U.S. and the Gulf Coast region, expanding its market presence in the Sulfuric Acid business in North America.  Sumitomo agreed to fully acquire Saconix from Dallas based owners, Copperbeck Energy Partners, a portfolio company of Tailwater Capital, LLC. Saconix is one of the leading sulfuric acid distributors in North America providing logistics and storage solutions with strategically located assets, adding value through its functions and services that are very similar to Sulphuric Acid Trading Company (SATCO) Tampa, FL, another SC Group company.  With this acquisition, SC expands its footprint in the U.S. sulfuric acid business, adding operations and access now in both the Gulf region and West Coast region, including California, Nevada and Arizona.  “We identified Saconix as a strategic investment because its business model is extremely compatible with our current investments, and brings a high potential of growth synergy for our Sulfuric Acid business in the U.S., increasing our global competitiveness,” said Masaya Sato, Basic Chemical Group General Manager of SCOA.  “We expect to provide additional value and high service to our customers through the strong synergies of our global Sulfuric Acid business.”  Sulfuric acid is the most widely distributed basic chemical in the world, and it is an essential chemical for people’s lives because its uses span an extremely wide range of fields, including agriculture, industry, mining and textiles. Sulfuric acid is becoming increasingly important because of its increasing use at mining sites, such as copper, lithium and rare earth metals, which supports the realization of expecting a green society, and in the agricultural and fertilizer sectors, due to the increasing demand for food as the global population grows.  The Sumitomo Corporation Group’s sulfuric acid business began with the export of sulfuric acid produced from the smelting of nonferrous metals from Japan, and since 1994, when it acquired INTERACID TRADING S.A. (Lausanne, Headquarters), parent company of SATCO.  The SC group company handles one of the world’s largest sulfuric acid maritime transport transactions and provides a wide range of logistics services in countries such as the U.S. and Chile, including the trading of sulfuric acid by sea, the regional distribution, and the storage of sulfuric acid. INTERACID owns and operates its own storage tanks for sulfuric acid, providing customers with just-in-time delivery of product, and if needed, leasing of storage tank space to customers requiring personalized logistics services.  Saconix owns, leases and operates in 7 strategic logistics facilities in the U.S. Gulf and West Coast. After the acquisition, we will firmly secure the leading position in the industry with handling more than 3.5milion tons of sulfuric acid by utilizing 19 tanks with approximately 330,000 tons capacity as the group total.  This acquisition represents Sumitomo Corporation’s ongoing commitment to expanding business and facilitating global carbon reduction to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.


Chile closes state copper smelter that polluted bay for decades

June 1, 2023 - Chile's state-owned copper mining giant Codelco has shut down its Ventanas copper smelter after decades of polluting Quintero Bay with toxic gases and turning it, along with 15 other companies, into an environmental “sacrifice zone.”  Eight years ago, the Chilean government declared that the three municipalities surrounding the bay — Quintero, Puchuncaví, and Concón, located 160 kilometers northwest of the Chilean capital — were saturated with fine particulate matter, inhalation of which is associated with discomfort and respiratory ailments.  During a formal ceremony held on Wednesday in Puchuncaví, images of flames from the smelter’s furnace were shown gradually diminishing until they were fully extinguished, marking the closure of the copper smelter 59 years after its founding. A Codelco refinery will continue to operate at the site.  The latest mass intoxication by pollution in the region took place only a week ago and affected nearly 100 students who suffered intoxication due to the poor air quality. An environmental alert is still in effect.  The more than 50,000 inhabitants of the bay regularly breathe in sulfur dioxide, a toxic and corrosive gas that, when inhaled, causes irritation to the nose, eyes, and throat.  More than 60% of the total sulfur dioxide emissions in the area came from the state-owned smelter, President Gabriel Boric said last year when he announced its closure.  Matías Asún, director of Greenpeace Chile, said that while the closure of Ventanas “is a very important step,” he added that “we still need to see what we'll do with the entire industrial belt that was generated around the smelter.”  The oldest company in the region is an oil terminal belonging to the state-owned National Petroleum Company, established in 1954. That was followed a decade later by the Codelco smelter and refinery and several steam and coal-fired power plants.  David Boyd, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Environment, said during a recent visit to the region that he “smelled the toxic fumes” and “felt them in my throat.”  Pollution incidents in the area notably began to decrease in 2019 when emissions from the industrial belt began to be regulated.

Kazatomprom plans to increase production of sulfuric acid

 

April 24, 2023 - JSC National Atomic Company "Kazatomprom" announces the receipt of a certificate of state registration of a new enterprise Taiqonyr Qyshqyl Zauyty LLP, established in order to implement the project for the construction of a sulfuric acid plant in the Sozak district of Turkestan region. The founders of the Partnership were: NAC Kazatomprom JSC (49%), RU-6 LLP (25%), Kazatomprom-SaUran LLP (26%).  Currently, a feasibility study of the project is being completed and a potential investor is being selected. The final cost of creating an industrial enterprise will be determined after the approval of the design and estimate documentation. The start of construction of the sulfuric acid plant is planned in 2024, and the start of production and reaching full design capacity are expected in 2026.  Sulfuric acid is the main reagent used in uranium mining by in-situ leaching method. Its own production, located near the mines, will allow Kazatomprom to ensure the availability of an additional reliable and long-term source of acid supplies, reduce the ways of delivering goods to consumers, minimize cost increases and reduce the cost of uranium products.  The enterprise will be able to provide the production of sulfuric acid with a capacity of 800 thousand tons per year. At the same time, the plant will simultaneously generate 25-30 MWh of electricity from heat utilization, most of which will be sold to the Company's subsidiaries in the energy-deficient region.  The implementation of the project is strategically important both for Kazatomprom and for the Turkestan region. The modern sulfuric acid plant will make a significant contribution to the economic and social development of the region, attract additional investments, replenish tax revenues to the local budget, create new jobs - about 800 people will be involved in the construction of the facility, and about 500 people will be involved in operation.


MECS Awarded Spent Acid Regeneration Plant at Sinopec Zhenhai
 

April 19, 2023 - Large scale integrated refining-chemical complex is embracing the circular economy. Waste sulfuric acid from onsite processes will be regenerated for re-use.  Sinopec Zhenhai Refining and Chemical Co., Ltd (Sinopec), China’s largest integrated refining-chemical enterprise, has contracted with MECS, Inc. (MECS) and MECS Chemical Plants Equipment (Shanghai) Co., LTD., subsidiaries of Elessent Clean Technologies (Elessent), for the license, design, engineering, and equipment for a spent sulfuric acid regeneration plant. This plant will be located at Sinopec’s petrochemical complex in Ningbo, Zhenhai province, People’s Republic of China. The spent acid regeneration plant will be built in conjunction with Sinopec’s planned expansion of its sulfuric acid alkylation and acrylonitrile facilities at the Ningbo site.  The growing use of sulfuric acid alkylation by refineries and increased production of spent sulfuric acid from chemical plants necessitate a resource to process the additional spent acid being produced. For many companies, consistently dependable regeneration technology is critical to meeting capacity requirements and fulfilling end market demands. Worley announces contract award for Chemetics sulfuric acid technology

April 13, 2023 - Chemetics, the technology and solutions provider for sulfuric acid and other specialty chemical facilities of Worley (North Sydney, Australia), has been awarded a contract to install its CORE-SO2 sulfuric acid technology at Arafura Rare Earths Ltd.’s Nolans Project in Australia.  Located 135 km north of Alice Springs in Australia’s Northern Territory, this greenfield mine will extract and process neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr). These rare earth elements are used to create ultra-strong permanent magnets for a range of applications, such as household electronics and high-performance motors for electric vehicles.  We’re delivering the detailed engineering and supply of Chemetics’ CORE-SO2 technology for the site’s sulfuric acid plant, along with the associated oxygen plant.  This sulfuric acid plant will achieve significant sustainability improvements over similar capacity plants, thanks to its ability to idle while keeping the catalyst warm for extended periods of time, and high turnaround capability. It will be able to operate with 95 percent reduced sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions, when compared to traditional double contact double absorption (DCDA) plants.  The high-pressure steam production within the CORE-SO2 process will further reduce greenhouse gas emissions by enabling the generation of CO2-free electrical power. This will eliminate the need for a diesel or natural gas start-up burner.  Additionally, CORE-SO2 is 60 percent smaller than traditional sulfuric acid plants, leading to significant construction advantages. The plant requires fewer pieces of equipment, which allows for increased use of modularization. Turkestan rgn to complete construction of sulphur acid plant by late 2025

March 17, 2023 - Construction of a sulphur acid plant is set to be completed by the end of 2025 in Turkestan region, Kazinform correspondent reports.  Currently, the technical and economic justification of the project is underway. The development of design estimates is scheduled for mid-2023 and the construction is to begin in the middle of next year. The project is set to be completed by the end of 2025. The plant is to begin production and run at full capacity in 2026,» said Chairman of the Board of Kazatomprom Yerzhan Mukanov.  The plant is to produce 800 thousand tons of sulphur acid per year and provide employment to around 500 people.


Lithium Americas begins construction at Thacker Pass
 

March 3, 2023 - Lithium Americas Corp. has begun construction at its 100%-owned Thacker Pass lithium project in Humboldt County, Nevada, following the receipt of notice to proceed from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).  Construction at Thacker Pass commenced following the favorable ruling from the US District Court, District of Nevada for the issuance of the Record of Decision (ROD), where the Federal Court confirmed the permitting process for Thacker Pass was conducted thoroughly and responsibly. The Federal Court declined to vacate the ROD and ordered the BLM to consider one issue under the mining law relating to the area designated for waste storage and tailings and did not impose any restrictions expected to impact the construction timeline.  The company is working closely with the BLM to complete the required follow-up and does not expect it to impact the overall construction timeline.  Thacker Pass is targeting 80,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of battery-quality lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) production capacity in two phases of 40,000 tpa, respectively (“Phase 1” and “Phase 2”).  Phase 1 production is expected to commence in the second half of 2026. The project is expected to create 1,000 jobs during construction and 500 jobs during operations.  Construction, including site preparation, geotechnical drilling, water pipeline development and associated infrastructure, has commenced. Contracts for major earthworks have been awarded with activities expected to commence in the second half of 2023.  In Q4 2022, Bechtel Corporation was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contract for the construction of Thacker Pass Phase 1 with detailed engineering underway.

Established in 1906 and operationally headquartered in Chicago, EXP is a global leader in oil, gas and chemicals.

MECS, Inc. was awarded the contract for the technology license, engineering and equipment for their state-of-the-art MECS Heat Recovery System, to harness waste heat to generate steam which will subsequently be converted into carbon-free electricity for the processing plant.Contract selection and engineering for a Work Force Hub (housing for construction contractors) and transloading facility within the Winnemucca area have commenced.


Arafura awards Chemetics contract to install sulfuric acid technology

 

February 28, 2023 - Arafura Rare Earths Ltd. has awarded Chemetics Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Worley and leading provider of technology for sulfuric acid and other specialty chemical facilities, the contract to install Chemetics CORE-SO2TM sulfuric acid technology, at its Nolans project in the Northern Territory of Australia.  The scope of the contract is to deliver the detailed engineering and supply of the CORE-SO2 sulfuric acid plant plus the associated oxygen plant on a lump sum basis. Trafigura completes Ecobat Stolberg lead smelter purchase

February 15, 2023 - Commodity trader Trafigura said on Wednesday it has completed its purchase of Ecobat Resources Stolberg (ERS) multi-metals processing plant in Germany and plans to bring it online in the coming weeks to supply European battery producers.  The Stolberg plant will be operated and managed by Nyrstar, which Trafigura owns, and the Stolberg business will be renamed Nyrstar Stolberg GmbH, Trafigura said in a news release.  The plant was among several industrial sites damaged by massive flooding in Germany's west and south last year and has suffered months of lost production.  It has the capacity to produce 155,000 tonnes of lead, and more than 100 different specifications of lead alloys as well as 130,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid.  "We plan to bring Nyrstar Stolberg online in the coming weeks," Guido Janssen, co-CEO of Nyrstar, said.

Nuberg EPC awarded sulfuric acid plant project in Czech Republic

January 20, 2023 - Nuberg EPC has announced that it has been awarded a 550 tpd sulfuric acid plant project on an EPC based contract in Neratovice, Czech Republic. The project is owned by Spolana s.r.o, a leading chemical manufacturer located on the Elbe riverbank in Neratovice, Czech Republic. Spolana a.s is one of the largest chemical manufacturing companies in the Czech Republic.  The contract was signed at Spolana’s head office based in Neratovice in the presence of Mr. Sandip Kumar (Senior Manager, Business Development) who represented Nuberg EPC in Czech Republic and the management team of Spolana including Mr. Piotr Kearney (CEO), Mr. Miroslav Falta (Executive), Mr. Jaroslav Hacko (Director of Investment DPT.), Mr. Luboš Burdek (Project Execution Manager), Mr. Radek Brodil, (Project Business Manager), Mr. Pavel Malina (Head of Purchase Investment Dept.)  Nuberg EPC will be executing this project based on the latest Double Conversion Double Absorption (DCDA) technology. The plant is expected to be delivered in three years including project stages one, two and three. The company is taking up the project on an EPC based contract including the technology.  Sulfuric acid produced by the 550 tpd Sulfuric acid plant project in Czech Republic will be used for petrochemical and fertilizer based applications. It will also be used in mining and processing of some ores and minerals, manufacturing batteries, and etching surfaces. Sulfuric acid is also used in manufacturing of caprolactam, which is used in the production of nylon and perlon and subsequently in the textile and clothing industry.  Upon receiving the project, Mr. A. ANDRITZ : to supply SulfoLoop plant for commercial grade, concentrated sulfuric acid to the new Suzano mill in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Brazil

January 18, 2023 - ANDRITZ has received an order from Brazilian pulp producer Suzano to deliver a SulfoLoop concentrated sulfuric acid plant for its new pulp mill that Suzano is building in the municipality of Ribas do Rio Pardo, state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The pulp mill, delivered by ANDRITZ, is in the construction phase with start-up scheduled for the second half of 2024.  The sulfuric acid plant will have the capacity to produce 153 tons of commercial grade (>97%) sulfuric acid per day from the pulp mill's concentrated odorous gases and elemental sulfur - thus making the mill completely self-sufficient in sulfuric acid and recycling sulfur from the waste streams. The ANDRITZ SulfoLoop solution is based on the Wet-gas Sulfuric Acid (WSA) technology for converting wet, sulfur-rich gases and elemental sulfur into sulfuric acid.  The sulfuric acid mill will help the new Suzano mill in Ribas do Rio Pardo to control the sodium and sulfur (Na/S) balance and the sulfidity of the pulp mill. Also, the resource-efficiency of the mill will be improved because less sulfate needs to be discharged due to the optimized Na/S balance. An added advantage is that there is no need for hazardous sulfuric acid transport to the mill, which results in a major reduction in the truck transportation volume. The sulfuric acid plant also meets very strict air emission limits and therefore brings a significant improvement to the overall footprint of the new Suzano plant in Ribas do Rio Pardo.  This order once again confirms the excellent business relationship between ANDRITZ and Suzano. Currently ANDRITZ is in the process of supplying all pulp mill technology and process equipment for the new Suzano plant in Ribas do Rio Pardo. Once completed, the pulp mill will be the world's largest plant with a single eucalyptus pulp production line.  SulfoLoop sulfuric acid plants are part of the company's CircleToZero initiative, which includes new technologies aimed at optimizing pulp mill side streams. Metso Outotec, Thyssenkrupp Uhde to develop phosphogypsum processing options for Ma’aden

January 18, 2023 - Metso Outotec says it and thyssenkrupp Uhde have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ma’aden in Saudi Arabia for developing a novel circular concept to improve the sustainability of Ma’aden’s phosphate operations.The aim is to design a groundbreaking integrated complex for processing of phosphogypsum, a waste by-product from phosphoric acid production, to reduce the amount of solid waste and allow the capture of CO2 emissions.  The new circular process will be incorporated into Ma’aden’s phosphate operations to support the company in achieving its ambitious sustainability goals aligned with the Kingdom’s objectives, Metso Outotec said.  For the development of this process, Metso Outotec’s extensive know-how and experience in the field of fluid bed and sulfuric acid solutions will be used.  Hannes Storch, Vice President for Metals and Chemicals Processing at Metso Outotec, said: “We are honoured to be part of this unique initiative.  Decarbonisation and circularity are relevant for all industries, and the new concept to be developed for phosphogypsum processing will be a major step forward in the fertiliser industry, contributing to efforts limiting global warming.”
