Quartz rock is used in the converter to prevent the smaller catalyts particles from falling through the support grids and as a hold-down layer on top of the catalyst to prevent movement of the bed. The quartz rock used in sulphuric acid plant converters must meet the following requirements:
When specifying the quantity of quartz rock required, allow for a 50 mm (2") layer above and below the catalyst bed. An extra 5-10% should be specified to account for settling and losses.
